Experimental Film Techniques

Non- narrative and Non- linear

Most conventional films follow a narrative which strictly follows a linear sequence, or at least one that can be followed with ease. However, experimental films tend to have little to no structure when it comes to narrative or follow one that is more symbolic. Structure in experimental films can be found in recurring themes, popular in surrealist films such as “An Andalusian Dog” which expresses themes such as death and decay, sexual harassment and male dominance. However, there is still a feeling of disconnection and contrast as these themes often jump from one to another, frequently juxtaposing each other to add further confusion and overall WTF!!! This film also follows dream logic which means there is little to zero correlation between scenes and all rules of logic disappear.

Visuals and Sound

One film that uses a wide range of unconventional visual effects is “Light is Waiting” by Micheal Robinson. At first we see the beginning of an innocent family sitcom tv show, until a tv is dropped and the viewer enters almost an alternate reality of trippy nightmarish visuals. The flashing lights and deafening audio places the audience into an uncomfortable state, which almost made me turn the film off myself. We are then submerged into a ritual of tracing mirrored imagery and echoing broken speech and sound. This is amplified gradually for 5 minutes until we enter what seems to be hell itself with drowned out and slowed down music and a red filter. The whole experience is what can closely be related to a bad psychedelic trip, taking the audience on a bizarre frightening and unearthly journey. This film is immensely experimental, there is no time frame or explanation behind what, where, who or why.

Peculiar Mis-en-scene

It’s not uncommon for experimental films to be produced by artists themselves, in fact many experimental films are considered pieces of art alone. So often there are wacky props and sfx makeup that don’t necessarily have to have any meaning behind.
